Introducing the real beauty of mathematics to elementary school students
Commonly viewed as a difficult subject, mathematics at grade school level has been overly simplified. This deprives young math learners the opportunity to see the true beauty of mathematics. As a consequence, many see it as a difficult and boring subject. To spark and retain students’ interest in mathematics, it is necessary to introduce the most important elements of mathematics such as logic, proof, generality to young math learners. Should we give kids answers?
It is a familiar scene but one that often upsets parents and dreads teachers: you give the kids a problem, they read it and become silent, and remain silent for a long time even after you ask them to speak up. “Are they thinking or have they got lost?”, you wonder. Then when pressed, they tell you that they are still thinking or they don’t know how to do it.
You don’t want to give them solutions all the time as this is not true learning but at the same time it’s not easy to see them struggle and get frustrated. What can we do to help them?
